A Few Words About Technology and CollaborationOur_class.jpg

As a class, we are beginning to focus on 21st Century Skills to help prepare students to function and compete in the new global community. In addition to core skills students have always studied in school, 21st Century Skills include technology, collaboration, and innovation. In Pre-AP Language Arts, we are particularly interested in helping students develop these skills.

Not everyone is technology savvy. Some folks sit down at a computer and just figure out how it all works by experimentation and practice. Others need more direction and guidance. Collaborative groups usually have a good mixture of both types. While it is important to develop computer and technical skills, it is equally important to develop the people skills that come from sharing knowledge with each other. It's also important to be boldly curious -- to solve problems by experimentation.

Students, there may be times when you may feel overwhelmed and helpless, confused about class expectations, about wikis, about the literature you read... about a zillion things at once. When that happens, take a deep breath and do your best to plunge right in and see what you can learn by experimentation, by speculation, by methodical practice. Contact someone else in your group and see if by putting two (or three or four) heads together, you can solve a problem. Contact your teacher and see if she can shed any light on the problem. Don't give up and try not to get discouraged. It is from this process of moving from confusion to competency that you will learn most, uncomfortable as it may be sometimes.images.jpg

Most of all, enjoy the ride. It can get bumpy sometimes, but it sure is worth it... and you're never alone!
